Carpet Padding Removal in Star

Carpet padding looks like the easy part of a flooring tear-out, until it turns out to be the part still stuck to the subfloor. In newer Star subdivisions like Heron River, Movado Estates, and Skybreak, most homes are only a decade or so old, so the pad underneath is usually the original builder-grade stuff — often stapled or taped down tight, and sometimes damp from a slow leak nobody noticed until the carpet came up.

On the larger rural-residential lots along the Boise River corridor, it's a different story. Older pad has had more time to break down, hold moisture, or pick up whatever a horse property or hobby farm tracks in. Either way, getting padding out cleanly and off the property is its own job, separate from pulling the carpet itself.

What Actually Moves the Price and the Time

Padding removal sounds simple, but a few things decide whether it's a quick job or a long one. How it's attached matters most — loose-lay pad comes up fast, while pad that's stapled, taped, or glued to the subfloor takes real time to scrape clean without damaging the floor underneath.

Beyond that, a handful of factors tend to move things one way or the other:

• Square footage and how many rooms are involved
• Whether it's stapled, taped, or glued down versus loose
• Moisture, mold, or pet staining, which adds weight and careful handling
• Stairs, narrow hallways, or furniture that has to move first
• Whether the job is tied to a leak or water damage that needs faster turnaround

Where It Goes Once It Leaves Your House

Old carpet pad from a Star job generally heads to the Ada County Landfill at Hidden Hollow off Seamans Gulch, or gets routed through the Meridian Transfer Station — both sit east of Star off the Hwy 44/Hwy 55 corridor. Pad doesn't recycle the way clean wood or scrap metal does, so it's sorted and handled as trash or construction and demolition debris rather than a diverted material.

That matters for how a job gets loaded and hauled. The landfill won't take hazardous waste or out-of-county loads, and every load headed there needs to be tarped or strapped down. It's one more reason padding usually gets bagged or rolled tight before it ever leaves the property.

City Programs or a Hauler?

Star residents on Republic Services curbside do have options. Bulky item pickup runs year-round for an additional fee, and there are two unlimited clean-up weeks a year — one the first full week of April, one the first full week after Christmas — when bulky items and non-Freon appliances go out free.

Carpet padding doesn't always fit neatly into those programs, though. It has to be cut, rolled, and set out on a scheduled pickup day, and timing a flooring project around one of only two cleanup weeks a year isn't realistic for most renovations. If you're redoing more than a room or two, or you can't wait for the next cleanup window, hiring it out tends to be the simpler move.

Padding removal in Star comes down to how it's attached, how much of it there is, and getting it sorted correctly once it's out the door — the rest is just work.
